About Iyengar Yoga

Helen Gillan in seated yoga positionYoga energises the body, mind and spirit. Physically it strengthens the body by developing greater flexibility and balance. Psychologically, yoga sharpens the intellect, aids concentration and steadies the emotions. Sligo Yoga Centre has a wide range of yoga courses and special workshops suitable for all ages and levels of experience. Our yoga teachers are fully qualified and experienced. Sligo Yoga Centre is exclusively an Iyengar Yoga centre and all of our teachers are Iyengar trained.

Iyengar Yoga focuses on precision and alignment of the body. It is very innovative in the use of props to help develop greater intelligence in one's body and a deeper understanding of the classic yoga asanas (postures). Evolved by BKS Iyengar, who is generally considered to be one of the world's leading yogis, Iyengar yoga can be practiced at the highest levels. Iyengar yoga teachers go through rigorous training. Before they begin, they must have done at least three years of Iyengar yoga classes and are selected for teacher training if their yoga practice is of sufficient standard. The basic training is then a minimum of two and a half years.

This certification is a registered trademark awarded to teachers who are approved members of the Iyengar Yoga Association of UK and Ireland.
